B&V’s “By Others” Gallery 02.09: Etta Lilienthal

Capitol Hill Art Walk is coming up, and Board & Vellum is hosting a brand new show by Etta Lilienthal. Read our Q&A and get to know the artist ahead of the February 9th opening reception for standstill, a site-specific installation in our public gallery space, “By Others.”

February 1, 2017

Board & Vellum is excited to announce that Etta Lilienthal will be the next artist featured in By Others, the gallery space at our 15th Avenue offices.

Etta’s work in environmental installation, sculpture and performance design has been seen locally and around the world with Olson Kundig Architects, Degenerate Art Ensemble, Kronos Quartet, Suyama Space, Frye Art Museum, and many others.

We hope you’ll join us for an opening reception for Etta’s latest work, standstill, a site-specific light installation that “captures the solitary moment of spaciousness,” on the evening of Thursday, February 9, as part of the Capitol Hill Art Walk. During the event (from 6-9 p.m.) you’ll have the chance to meet the artist and mingle over drinks and light appetizers.

To pique your interest, we asked Etta to tell us a little more about her work…

B&V: Why did you choose light as your primary medium for recent work?

EL: Light for me is an expression of life and energy; it is transformational, and its absence or existence can allow us to see our existence more clearly.

B&V: What’s been the most surprising aspect of working with light?

EL: Its physical intensity and power to draw people toward it.

B&V: Tell us about standstill, the installation you’re creating for Board & Vellum.

EL: The piece at B&V will be an exploration into reflection – both literally light reflected in different surfaces, as well as how we as humans reflect on ourselves and our place in space.

B&V: Do you have a dream space or landmark in Seattle where you’d love to do a light install?

EL: I've always wanted to create an installation above the Yesler Bridge in the International District. That location is an incredible intersection of water, city, sky, and mountains, and I imagine a form that draws those elements together in synthesis.
