Firm Culture

Introducing, Jill!

Everyone, say hello to Jill Burdeen! Jill joins our team as a member of the “Neighborhood Studio,” with a special focus on multi-family residential projects. At work, she loves “solving” the site and collaborating to create great spaces. Out of the office, she enjoys adventuring with her daughters, and dreams of opening a candy store.

November 27, 2018

Hello, everyone!

My name is Jill, and I am originally from Chicago(ish). I am delighted to have just joined the B&V #neighborhoods team in November 2018. I look forward to participating in the collaborative and integrated culture that has become synonymous with Board & Vellum.

After completing graduate school at the Illinois Institute of Technology, I packed up my car and drove out to Seattle to “get it out of my system.” I had always known that, even though I had only spent a few short days here previously, Seattle was where I was supposed to be. I had every intention of spending a year or two on the left coast and returning to the mid-west. Meanwhile, here I am, a career, a house and a family later. I never did get Seattle “out of my system.” I like to say that Chicago has my heart and Seattle has my soul.

I worked at Driscoll Architects for several years when I first moved to Seattle. It was there that I really became heavily interested in the “puzzle” that is multi-family urban infill housing. I learned how much I enjoy “solving” the site — discovering the anomalies and finding creative solutions, using efficiency as a motivation to fill the site and create truly usable spaces.

I joined NK Architects back in 2005 as a “jack of all trades.” My role was to take a project from inception to completion. In my tenure with NK, the office evolved as did my role. I don’t know how it happened, but I also learned to enjoy taking on operational tasks such as developing the office standards, creating an advocate program, mentoring staff members, and progressing office procedural programs. The part of my job that I have found to be the most rewarding is being a resource to colleagues. I enjoy sharing the knowledge I have gained from past experiences and witnessing the evolution of all the processes along the way.

I appreciate that B&V encourages a healthy work-life balance, so I can chase rainbows and ride carousels with my two daughters. We’re constantly on the go, so sometimes it feels like being at work is more tranquil than not being at work. It should also be said that I am obsessed with Gilmore Girls, am an excellent parallel parker, can plan a kick-ass (children’s) party, and aspire to one day opening a candy store.

I’m sincerely looking forward to contributing to an environment that aligns with my strengths and values, through encouraging personal and professional growth, providing safe spaces for open idea exchanges, solving problems in interesting and attractive ways, and creating trusting teams. Looking forward to collaborating!

Introducing, Andrea!

Say hi to Andrea, our most recent addition to the B&V team! Adding to our collection of UO grads, Andrea joins us with experience on multifamily, custom residential, and commercial projects. Also, she owns a 35' sailboat — when you’re done asking her design questions, ask her where she likes to sail on a sunny weekend!

Introducing, Danie!

Meet Danie, the latest addition to B&V’s interiors team. Danie hails from the Midwest, most recently from Chicago. In “fun facts you don’t hear often” — she grew up with a Christmas tree farm as a backyard! Now surrounded by the giant trees of the Pacific Northwest, when she’s not designing interiors, she loves the outdoors.

Introducing, Christina!

It‘s time to meet a new B&V’er: Christina! Hailing from Denver, Colorado, Christina caught the travel bug young: first traveling the US with her family, then abroad on her own. Beyond the sheer delight of it, her travels also inform her desire to harness architecture as a catalyst for positive change in the world.
