Jill Burdeen – Meet a B&V'er – Board & Vellum

Introducing, Jill!

Hello, everyone!

My name is Jill, and I am originally from Chicago(ish). I am delighted to have just joined the B&V #neighborhoods team in November 2018. I look forward to participating in the collaborative and integrated culture that has become synonymous with Board & Vellum.

After completing graduate school at the Illinois Institute of Technology, I packed up my car and drove out to Seattle to “get it out of my system.” I had always known that, even though I had only spent a few short days here previously, Seattle was where I was supposed to be. I had every intention of spending a year or two on the left coast and returning to the mid-west. Meanwhile, here I am, a career, a house and a family later. I never did get Seattle “out of my system.” I like to say that Chicago has my heart and Seattle has my soul.

I worked at Driscoll Architects for several years when I first moved to Seattle. It was there that I really became heavily interested in the “puzzle” that is multi-family urban infill housing. I learned how much I enjoy “solving” the site — discovering the anomalies and finding creative solutions, using efficiency as a motivation to fill the site and create truly usable spaces.

I joined NK Architects back in 2005 as a “jack of all trades.” My role was to take a project from inception to completion. In my tenure with NK, the office evolved as did my role. I don’t know how it happened, but I also learned to enjoy taking on operational tasks such as developing the office standards, creating an advocate program, mentoring staff members, and progressing office procedural programs. The part of my job that I have found to be the most rewarding is being a resource to colleagues. I enjoy sharing the knowledge I have gained from past experiences and witnessing the evolution of all the processes along the way.

I appreciate that B&V encourages a healthy work-life balance, so I can chase rainbows and ride carousels with my two daughters. We’re constantly on the go, so sometimes it feels like being at work is more tranquil than not being at work. It should also be said that I am obsessed with Gilmore Girls, am an excellent parallel parker, can plan a kick-ass (children’s) party, and aspire to one day opening a candy store.

I’m sincerely looking forward to contributing to an environment that aligns with my strengths and values, through encouraging personal and professional growth, providing safe spaces for open idea exchanges, solving problems in interesting and attractive ways, and creating trusting teams. Looking forward to collaborating!

Introducing, Christina!

It‘s time to meet a new B&V’er: Christina Sanchez! Hailing from Denver, Colorado, Christina caught the travel bug young: first traveling the US with her family, then abroad on her own. Beyond the sheer delight of it, her travels also inform her desire to harness architecture as a catalyst for positive change in the world.

Introducing, Taylor!

Say hello to Taylor, a landscape architect joining our team at Board & Vellum. Taylor has a deep curiosity for the environment and its complex systems, both natural and social. When he is not in the office, he is likely exploring in the mountains or people-watching at the park.

Introducing, Aaron!

Meet Aaron Dorn, a new B&V’er joining our custom residential architecture studio! Aaron is a northwest native from southern Idaho. He carries a love of a family cabin in the woods forward with a fervent belief that our homes should engage with nature to not only shelter but nourish us, even in the city.
