Restoring a Modest Ranch House
Modern Art Deco Bungalow
Bringing old glamour and new life to a modest ranch house.
Some projects announce themselves. This one arrived quietly. A small, unassuming white box of a ranch house that the homeowners had fallen for precisely because of its simplicity. Built in an era of old glamour, the house carried the bones of something special. The instinct to preserve as much of the original structure as possible guided early decisions, until it didn’t. The quaint home needed more work than a remodel could accomplish, and, ultimately, the house came down to its foundation. What survived, however, was a commitment to honoring the era and the place.

In taking the home down to its foundation, the homeowners saw an ideal opportunity to modernize it with a nod to the era’s Art Deco style. Curves and gentle geometry translate into a quiet, tactile palette suited to an intimate bungalow deeply connected to a sense of place.
Throughout, finishes and materials honor both the home’s location and its history. From honed stone and plaster walls, to inset toe kicks, and custom wood-slat vents that double as towel plinth, every surface was sincerely considered and executed.

With homeowners who trusted our design instincts, our team’s interior design scope grew to encompass nearly every interior detail. Door hardware, lighting, ceiling profiles, cabinetry, tile layout, and more; the creative latitude helped us build a strong design language that grounds the home in a luxurious yet livable style.
Color arrives carefully, through art, textiles, and a pop of blue on the window frames. The doors, appearing black, are in fact an oxidized grey bronze. These quiet surprises reward a second look.
The curved line became the project’s through-line, reappearing in the vaulted ceiling, the soaking tub surround, the fireplace profile, and the cabinet details. Consistency in the home’s design language belies deeply intentional details that are technically demanding while remaining visually restrained.

Once such example is the show stopping living room fireplace, detailed with inverted fluting and softly rounded edges. The tile work follows the same philosophy. In the powder room, each tile was individually placed, alternating gloss and matte finishes in a pattern subtle enough to read as texture before it reads as pattern.
At every turn, the homeowner protected and advocated for details large and small that brought the design to life. In the primary bedroom suite, a complex, custom, waterjet-cut tile surround at the tub survived the chopping block thanks to the homeowner who insisted on its inclusion.

Perhaps the most personal detail is the one that nearly didn’t survive demolition. An old vanity cabinet, original to the primary bedroom, was slated for the dumpster. We had seen its proportions, understood its potential, and advocated for its rescue. It was brought back, salvaged, and found a new home in the primary bedroom closet.
The homeowners now view this relaxing oasis home as one of their favorite places. Even their college-age children seek it out as a refuge. This result is a tribute to the care and attention brought to the project by the homeowner, and their trust in our vision for what this home could become.
