A Modern Addition to an Old Home

Ragtime Redux

A modern, several-story addition to an old home on the south slope of Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill.

With commanding views of the Seattle skyline and Puget Sound, this residence underwent a complete historic remodel with a modern addition. The original residence was built in 1903, and possesses a unique charm and style all its own. With this design, we took the opportunity to engage our passion for carefully restoring classic homes, while simultaneously inserting a sleek modern addition. The resulting mix of styles is a testament to the client’s diverse knowledge and interest in architecture.

To the street, very little has changed, and the original façade is carefully restored with its turn-of-the-century details intact. But on the backside, it’s a whole new ball game.

The modern addition presents a series of interconnected, rectilinear volumes inserted into the original home with surgical precision. Its honest materials are cleanly expressed, and large swathes of glazing take advantage of the site’s incredible views. Representing the best of both worlds, this home elegantly accommodates the client’s needs, while making the most of an amazing piece of property.
