Connecting a New Family Home to Nature
Legacy in Timber
A uniquely Pacific Northwest home with a modern lens that honors nature, daily life, and generational connection.
Tucked into the rural foothills of the Cascades, this family legacy home is designed to endure. The homeowners came to us with a vision: crafting a property and family home that honors the rhythm of their daily lives, highlights their land’s natural beauty, and creates an architectural family heirloom that can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Rooted in its physical location, the design prioritizes sweeping views of the homeowner’s beloved horses and their paddock, pasture, and the surrounding forests.
A love of natural materials and a modern lens inspired the home’s design. The homeowners found a vision in stonework, heavy timber, and the iconic forms of Pacific Northwest and national park lodges, focusing on look that would age to an elegant patina with time.
The home is built around a strong indoor-outdoor connection, bringing the property’s natural beauty to the fore. A layered approach creates zones that ease the transition from inside to outside while maintaining a focus on connection to the land. Large expanses of glazing make way to a spacious deck, with a patio and fire pit below, where the yard blends back into its natural surroundings.
Much attention was paid to situating the home on the property. We explored a variety of massing options and orientations, and utilized a solar study before selecting a location and layout that served both the client and the land.
The home itself is comprised of two distinct wings: a children’s wing and an ample primary suite for the adults. The children’s wing contains not only bedrooms, but an anchoring vaulted play loft, where the kids can spread out while containing the inevitable mess.
The primary suite offers the parents a peaceful retreat. Expansive windows allow this space to feel secluded while still maintaining a visual connection to the rest of the home and property.
At the center stands a great room, where children and parents come together to connect as a family. Outdoor terraces, an oversized hearth, and dramatic vaulted ceilings lend a sense of prominence and importance to the space and offer year-round entertaining opportunities.
Beneath all this is a walkout basement level containing a large workshop and wood shop, as well as a dedicated space for crafting, hobbies, and other messy family projects.
Inside and out, this home celebrates authenticity – in both design and materials, as well as in its representation of the homeowner’s values and family. The project isn’t just about a house, but putting down roots and building a home that empowers this family to live, build, and dream together.
