Global Perspective Meets Pacific Northwest Chic

Scout Apartments

A multifamily refresh curated for an immersive resident and guest experience.

The owners of this multifamily property in Kirkland, Washington sought to create an amenity experience embracing a global perspective within the Pacific Northwest community with a wanderlust vibe. The property needed a major renovation to meet the owner’s vision, and required substantial updates to help the amenity spaces feel fresh, unique, and attractive to current and future tenants.

We started by reconceptualizing the amenity building to address the apartment complex’s updated brand identity, helping it stand out in a crowded market. Our design stripped the existing amenity building to the studs — a fresh slate for completely redesigned and reprogrammed spaces that achieve the desired mix of function and feel.

The transformation begins at the amenity building entrance, where a new, large vestibule adds a stately presence guiding guests and residents into the leasing office. Large windows and warm-toned, natural wood accents are fresh and modern with a disinctly Pacific Northwest feel.

The grand entrance sets the stage for a refreshed interior bathed in natural light, where double-height, vaulted ceilings, complete with large skylights, bring an outdoor scale indoors. Rather than downplay the room’s scale, we embraced the high, sloped ceiling with a library wall of shelving to house a unique collection of books and vintage, one-of-a-kind, objects that could be imagined as the memorabilia collected on a long roadtrip. The large-scale shelving provides visual interest for a modern take on a map room, but is also usable and practical as storage.

The curated art and accessories add uniqueness and authenticity to each space. From maps to graphic prints to modern botanical drawings, the decorative elements reflect the intersection of local community and global exploration that is so integral to the sense of place — a conceptual extension of the apartment community’s brand interpreted in physical form.

The metal, wood, and glass that dominate the building’s entrance are softened by a mix of soft furniture in the sitting area. Saturated blues add harmony to muted greens and warm neutrals that pick up the coloring of the wood accents. Geometric-patterned throw pillows create a pleasing dissonance, both contrasting the organic materials and mirroring the rhythm of the bookshelves, entry tile, and statement wallpaper in the recessed sitting alcove.

Beyond the sitting room, a community kitchen and lounge connect to an updated pool and pool deck. The playful back-and-forth between textures and patterns is delightfully apparent in these spaces, especially in the kitchen where clean lines meet a forest of living house plants.

This juxtaposition carries through to the comfortable, custom-upholstered banquette — where its crisp angles interplay with round bistro tables, and metal chairs are softened with leather and a moss-green hue.

In the lounge just past the kitchen, folding glass doors capture the natural light and blend the interior and exterior spaces. The abundant natural light illuminates the grass-like rug, offset by the square forms of the couch, bench, and media console.

Reimagining the amenity areas provided us with the opportunity to curate the experiences of the residents and guests who will inevitably use these spaces. Accessories, such as indoor plants, pillows, and rugs bring a sense of place, but also tell a story.

By balancing the usability of simple and beautiful pieces with a variety of textures, patterns, and colors each space received an added depth of experience, leaving more to be discovered upon each visit.
