The homeowners also wished to embrace the home’s existing, more traditional Tudor-inspired exterior, with interior detailing that would create continuity between the interior and exterior of the home.

Of course, their modern tastes, active lifestyle, and plans for a family in the future, needed to be considered in the overall design, as well. With a too-big living room and a too-small kitchen, finding a way to equalize and modernize the spaces was top-of-mind. The expanded kitchen embraces its traditional, Tudor-inspired exterior in a detailed chef’s kitchen perfect for hosting.

Once closed off, a curved archway between rooms and new and enlarged windows take full advantage of the property’s privacy and proximity to a park. Now, light pours into the kitchen from all sides.

Brass pendants over a new, central kitchen island complement the soft white, polished quartz countertops; the subtle, warm brown vein of which plays off the neutral shade of the custom, shaker cabinets. A brass picture light above the kitchen sink is the pair of the fixture above the near-by coffee bar, another aesthetic link between the spaces.

The homeowners were keen on the idea of incorporating vintage pieces into the space, and we sourced a beautiful set of salvaged doors that fit the pantry’s framed dimensions. Though we planned to use the doors’ original vintage glass, it was broken in transit. This unhappy accident, however, led us to replace the original glass with new reeded glass matching the reclaimed piece’s antique charm.

The pantry doors were then cleaned, stained, and affixed with brass cabinet hardware to create further harmony between the old and the new.

In the living room, a custom coffee bar was created as the perfect spot for a beloved La Marzocco espresso machine. Conveniently adjacent to the kitchen, it doubles as a hospitality bar, ideal for hosting larger groups.

A gently curved archway to the kitchen provides a visual cue of separation between the spaces in a traditional form, while maintaining the sense of connection desired by the homeowners.

Open shelving with brass rails, and flanking curio cabinets allow a collection of flat and stemware, along with mugs and espresso cups, to be not only functional objects but objects d’art. A petite sink provides added utility and functionality to the bar without sacrificing working surface area on the counter.

The casework is, fittingly, painted a shade of café au lait — a neutral, light, stone brown that elegantly blends with the home’s warmer tones. Paired with a charcoal soapstone countertop and traditional brass hardware, the coffee bar creates an atmosphere that is luxurious yet reserved, traditional yet perfectly suited for the day-to-day of modern family life.

Upstairs, the primary bathroom is a destination in and of itself. Designed to complement the classic Tudor architecture, it blends handcrafted elements with modern, clean lines for a spa-like feel.

The mix of patinated, hand-crafted materials with modern lines creates an unexpected blend of traditional and contemporary. Surrounding the tub and shower is hand-pressed Moroccan ceramic tile. These natural clay tiles feature expected imperfections that add subtle texture and color variations throughout the space.

In contrast, the clean, French casement black windows and pendant over the tub add a modern twist to these organic-feeling elements.

The bathroom’s generous double vanity features custom casework in alder, stained in a rich hue with textural tambour fronts, topped in a soft white quartz. Sconces with reeded glass shades mirror the casework’s ribbing at a finer scale.

This traditional-leaning bathroom is outfitting with contemporary conveniences, such as a shower niche with cohesive tile trim and shelving adjacent to the tub. Unlacquered brass brackets and a marble ledge add to the bathroom’s sense of place, and relaxing atmosphere.

Nestled in a traditional home bathed mostly in neutrals, this petite powder room is an unexpected colorful move creating a moment of joy. The Gardens of Jaipur wallpaper is a charmingly whimsical print featuring a veritable menagerie of exquisitely detailed flora and fauna. Peacocks, deer, leopards, and cows offer something new to be seen at each observation. Iconic buildings in the city’s famous pink, and a variety of figures enjoying the gardens complete the bountiful scene.

The warm brown hue of the stained ash vanity pairs with similar hues in the wallpaper, while its ribbed detailing ensures continuity of textural richness throughout. A striking, polished back marble countertop anchors the jewel-toned wallpaper, providing appropriate visual weight to support the dramatic print and keeping in line with the small space’s moody vibe.

Above, a playful round mirror is framed in a matching black hue, acting almost like a portal into the decorative garden. These bold design choices make the small space stand out in a big way, a stand-out, jewel-toned jewel box enticing those who view across its threshold to partake in its drama.

Elsewhere on the main floor, a flex space serves as an accessible guest suite for a comfortable stay when the homeowners’ parents visit.

A new mudroom at the garage entry makes for a convenient drop zone whether entering through the garage or the main entry, featuring custom casework spacious enough for a full house. A nearby laundry room facilitated a coveted laundry chute directly to the laundry counter from the hall above, within easy reach of the bedrooms.

Throughout the home, a palette that pairs the subtle beauty and glow of natural wood, brass, and stone with earthy neutrals, the finished home is a light, bright, and fresh space that radiates warmth throughout the year.
