Expanding an Out-of-Date Kitchen

Traditional Sunlit Kitchen

Space and light are hallmarks of this updated, traditional kitchen.

With an out-of-date kitchen that clashed with the rest of their home’s traditional style, these homeowners came to us with a clear vision for their project: updating their 1980s kitchen, adding more functional space in a style in-line with the home’s existing character.

They already had a very specific aesthetic vision in mind, balancing a classic look with modern functionality. More storage, additional counter space, and improved circulation and layout were chief among their desires. Creating a more usable kitchen space was made possible by a significant expansion into what was once a dining area. With more room to work, features like a central island, adequate storage, and improved flow and circulation were achieved.

Though the change required the loss of their formal dining room, relocating the existing dining table to join their living room had the unanticipated benefit of improving their home’s overall layout for entertaining.

The range and range hood were crucial to the kitchen’s design. It was important to the homeowners that this particular piece — one they picked out even before starting their design with us — be incorporated into the final design.

Instead of simply including the range as a necessary piece of equipment, we leaned into their request, making it central to the design as a focal point within the kitchen’s layout. A visual anchor against the white countertops and mostly-white tile backsplash, the stunning navy blue range and hood grounds the space.

Though initially of less concern to the homeowners, maintaining and augmenting the home’s natural light was an essential component of the final design. We advocated for retaining existing window locations where possible, and strategically relocating others, to enhance the bright, open feeling of the kitchen.

To create a desirable countertop height, which was slightly higher than the original countertop height, we opted to raise the window sill heights and replace the existing kitchen windows, which allowed us to salvage and reuse the original window trim, cut to match the new window dimensions.

To bring daylight even deeper into the space, a custom, built-in display cabinet incorporates glazed side panels to borrow light from the adjacent windows. Another central feature to the updated kitchen, the display cabinet adds much-needed storage to the space in a special way, allowing the homeowners to show off their collection of stemware.

Raising the bar with the details, the space is full of carefully selected materials and finishes that blend seamlessly into to home’s traditional style.

The central, walnut island countertop was completed with a unique profile in a custom, sculpted edge that emphasizes the space’s traditional aesthetic. Our team also took great pains to layout the tile backsplash to ensure the corners — some light and some dark — align in a visually pleasing way.

The resulting updates double the size of their kitchen, creating the much-needed space the homeowners were after. Updates to their bathrooms were performed at the same time, rounding out upgrades that speak to both the homeowners’ functional needs and desired aesthetic.

Constant communication contributed to this impressive result that gives these homeowners more than they expected. Careful planning and collaboration brought together a design that enhances their daily lives in ways both big and small.
