New Construction Sustainable Living

England Comes to Redmond

A sustainable home featuring rainwater catchment, super-insulated walls, and ground-source heating.

Following a relocation from England to the Seattle area, these homeowners dreamed of a new abode that encompassed the personality and charm of their origins. While the rainy weather and luscious Pacific Northwest greenery aren’t a far cry from the conditions in England, they needed a permanent home to make their own.

Also integral to their vision was a desire for sustainability that still allowed them to enjoy modern comforts. We stepped in to consult on best practices for balancing sustainability with functionality and style. The home boasts several sustainable features, including rainwater catchment, super-insulated walls, and ground-source heating.

The walls of the home are crafted using multi-functional sustainable design methods. The 12-inch thick Durisol walls are fully insulated with recycled materials, while also being fireproof and highly energy efficient. Their thickness also lends an aesthetic quality, giving the window openings additional depth, creating a pleasant play of light.

Traditional lime stucco covers the exterior, in a neutral shade that blends perfectly into the wooded plot behind the home. The metal roof ensures longevity and helps to keep the rainwater cleaner for the cistern. A stone chimney, shingled siding, and flowering landscaping bring a cottage-like charm to the home reminiscent of the English countryside.
