What Makes a Home Feel Custom?
What makes a home feel custom and worth the investment? The answer changes from one person to the next. From fitted kitchen drawers and hidden shower drains to a secret scullery and a seriously quiet house, here are nine custom home features I’ve seen elevate everyday life at home.

I was in a client meeting recently, and we got into a discussion about the special attributes that make a home feel custom and worth the expense. It reminded me how many of these ideas I've heard, and offered, over the years. The one truth across all of them is that one person's idea of "custom" or "luxury" often contradicts someone else's. That's the real value of having a space designed for you. A home designed to suit everyone rarely feels like it was made for anyone in particular.
That said, here are some custom home features that I've found truly help distinguish a home and elevate the experience of the people living in it. None of these has to be right for you, but working with a talented design team can help you find the elements that make your custom home feel like yours.
A Fully Outfitted Kitchen
Grab a measuring tape and size your utensils. Drawers fitted with custom wood dividers, sized to what you actually own, can transform how you put things away. (Or maybe you love that giant drawer where all the spatulas are jammed together. Please don't look in my kitchen.)
A Tile Insert Linear Shower Drain
Some people hate seeing a square or round drain in the shower. A carefully detailed linear drain with a tile insert can visually disappear and make your shower feel more like a spa.
Fancy Doors with Concealed or Specialty Hinges
Door hardware can do incredible things. Secret panels, or hinges that disappear when the door is closed, are the kind of details you need to see to believe. They require careful detailing and execution, but when done right, they're awesome.
Quiet!
Getting acoustics right can change how a home feels every day. Maybe you're sensitive to noise, or maybe you love very loud movies. Investing the time and expense to dramatically reduce sound transmission makes a home more comfortable, and frankly, it's fun to show off. Hear that? Nope!
Lighting
I'm a lighting nerd through and through, and this topic can go deep. LED technology is outstanding, and it allows for all sorts of custom solutions that make a space shine.
A Damn Amazing Stair
A feature stair can become the centerpiece of a home. Getting it right takes careful detailing, and more budget than you might expect, but the result can be gorgeous.
A Secret Scullery or Pantry
A work zone tucked out of sight, with a second sink, a dishwasher, and an appliance garage, keeps the show kitchen pristine. I've always wanted one, so if you're a client and I suggest it (again), know it's because I want the best for you.
An Incredible Guest Room
Be careful with this one, since you may not want guests to stay forever, but an intentional guest space leaves a lasting impression. Amazing bunks, smart storage, special details, and great furniture all contribute to a memorable room.
A Truly Great Mechanical System
Radiant heat where you stand barefoot, a quiet energy or heat recovery ventilator (ERV or HRV) for fresh air, shading and overhangs to manage western sun, and prewiring for an EV charger and solar panels, even if you add them later. All of these remove the background noise of an uncomfortable environment.
There are a million more, and they all come back to the same idea: making a home custom starts with understanding who you are and what you value. Working with a design team means having someone who listens and translates your goals into a beautiful space designed just for you. You may hate the idea of a scullery (I'll be a little sad!) and want a slide down the middle of your house instead. It's your home. Work with a team that helps you craft a custom solution and build the home you actually want.
